Jena 6 was the start of it all. Back in 2006, a black student at Jena High School in Louisiana, asked the principal if he could sit under a tree on the school grounds. This particular tree is where white students normally sat. The next day, when the students showed up for school, three nooses were hanging in the tree. As racial tension tightened over the next few months riots broke out at the school. On December 4, 2006, a white student was beat up and hospitalized. Just days later six black students were arrested, all were charged with second degree attempted murder. They were known as the Jena 6.
During that time, my mother had taken me and my bros to march with the NAACP across the Trenton Makes Bridge. Going into the walk we were a crew that called themselves “Wavy”. Leaving there we were BNB; Brand Newbian Brothers. We had made the forever choice to make a difference in our community and not fall victim to the system. We knew we could use the influence we had to lead others in an alternative direction.
That day we became an alibi for the people.
